All About ACDVPA
A.C.D.V.P.A what the heck does that stand for? Well, I'll tell you it's the Awsworth and Cossall and District Village Produce Association. It's the oldest gardening club in the area with its roots in the 1930s. Long before garden centers and DIY superstores a group of local gardeners formed an organisation to buy their fertilizers and other garden necessities at wholesale prices
This continued through the war years of "Dig for Victory" when the association needed a government permit to purchase lime and other garden chemicals. Today it is a thriving active club.
Why should you join, even if you only have a window box or a pot or two?
We meet at The Gate Inn pub on the first Tuesday of most months and have a talk given by a specialist. Not just on gardening but on a whole range of subjects, plus there are snacks (and excellent beer at the pub!)
Once a year in summer we have our annual coach trip to some of the nation's finest gardens, in the past we've been to Harlow Carr near Harrogate with a stop at Bettys for some of the best fish and chips ever tasted!
The highlight of the year is the club's Annual Members Show, held in September. There are a wide range of exhibits with many trophies, cups, shields and money to be won.
And finally at Christmas we get together for our Christmas Dinner Party in a first class restaurant or in our local pub.
So come and join us and you will make friends for life membership currently is only £5 a year - you've just got to join!
Mr. Ken Wood (Founding member and previous Chairman, fondly remembered by all members)
